Day 3: February 15: Forest History 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

The North Shore of Lake Huron: Ontario’s Last Great White Pine Lumbering Area

Dr. Art Groot, Forest History Society of Ontario

Large-scale lumbering of white pine on the remote north shore of Lake Huron began in the 1880s, decades after the start of logging in the Ottawa Valley.  This presentation will offer a tour of the sawmills and communities that emerged between Spanish and Sault Ste. Marie and then faded as the pine was depleted by logging and fire.

Dr. Art Groot:

Art Groot earned a degree in forestry at the University of Toronto in 1979. He worked as a research scientist at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre for 34 years. After retiring, he started delving into the mining and forestry history of the Algoma region. Art operates a 29-ha woodlot on the outskirts of Sault Ste. Marie, and is a long-standing member of the Ontario Woodlot Association.
