Red Spruce in Eastern Ontario: No Longer Hiding in Plain Sight

Red Spruce is a keystone species that we are lucky to have native to our region. The presentation will cover how to recognize it, habitats it can be expected in, habitats where it probably won't be found and why attendees might want to grow it, etc. 

Owen Clarkin:

Owen Clarkin grew up near Russell Ontario and has been studying the trees of Eastern Ontario as a dedicated amateur since childhood.  Interests are focused on uncommon native species, restoration of extirpated species to local areas, tracking invading exotic tree species and new pests/diseases.  Observations of trees are posted publicly, primarily to the citizen scientist platform iNaturalist. Tree identification techniques are a special interest. While exploring the wild-growing trees of eastern Ontario, particular attention has been given to the Spruces (especially Red Spruce) and the Elms (especially Rock Elm and Slippery Elm).  Main affiliation is with the Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club, as the current Vice President and Chair of the Conservation Committee.
