Hi Folks.  Love this new social forum.  I am a new 100 Acre Woodlot owner since September. I am clearing about 1.5 acres to build a home next year.  Red Pine which was part of an interior forest planting in 1980.  They are about 50 ft tall and 8-12" in Dia.  I am curious what the cost to clear would be vs the value of the harvest. I am curious to hear recommendations and thoughts?

Hi Bill, I’m afraid I don’t have any hard and

fast numbers for you but I do know that mature

red pine is a desirable species and worth

some money.  It will most likely take quite a few

years to see that reality but if I were you I

would try to keep as many as possible and

manage the plantation with regular thinnings

    to maximize growth

Hi, Last spring we talked to a forester regarding the red pine on our woodlot and asked the same question. He basically said that once sold the logger gets a third, the hauler gets a third and you get a third. Because we were looking at approximately 2 acres of red pine that had never been thinned and about 60-70 years old we decided that it wouldn't be worth selling. Instead we decided we would be harvesting and milling the trees ourselves as needed and use the lumber for our woodlot projects.

Hi Guys, Much appreciate your feedback.  I am having a few local contractors come out and consult.  Journey continues.
