Thinning red pine plantation

    I have approximately 3000 Red Pines that were planted by MNR 50 or so years ago. I'd like to thin it out myself. How do you determine  which trees to harvest?

    Hi Mike, 

    Whereabouts are you located? The OWA can certainly help connect you with someone that can do that for you. The OWA has also started two cooperatives in the Huronia and Kawartha Chapters that specifically group landowners together to help facilitate this.

    HI Mike,

    I am a Registered Professional Forester. There are lots of resources on the OWA website and online. 3000 trees is likely a plantation of a few acres. The 1st commercial thinning would involve harvesting every 4th or 5th row. You could start by harvesting every 4th or 5th tree (choose the smallest, or forked/crooked trees), once the trees have closed crowns (bare ground with needles). Leave branches etc on the ground for organic matter and habitat.
